Sacred Trees series by Sergio Olivos M.From the earliest human writings and myths, trees have represented the power and mystery of nature. Large, ancient trees seemed immortal, demanding respect and reverence. They could bare huge crops of seeds and grow forests replete with their own offspring. When struck by lightning or set aflame, trees, even in death, were creatures of worship, awe, and fear – the homes of gods.Dogwood Tree

Legend goes that when Jesus was to be sentenced to death on the cross, a request went out for the building of a cross

It is said that because this was the wood that would be the last to touch Jesus as he died upon its branches- from the day of Jesus’ crucifixion-the Dogwood tree has no longer grown as in the past: the tallest and strongest; instead, they now grow twisted and slender. Additionally, the Dogwood’s flowers are shaped in the form of a cross and the tips of the blossoms have a tiny tinge of rust, representing Jesus’ blood.

Symbolically, as the blooms mature, the red begins to fade and white becomes the dominant color- incredible as white, is symbolic for ‘forgiveness through the blood’.

Cherry Blossoms

The Cherry Blossom Tree represents the ephemeral nature of life.

The transcendence of the blossoms, its extreme, delicate beauty and quick death- all have been associated with mortality. The Cherry blossoms bring awareness of, the transient nature of this world, but just as the trees lay dormant for only a season… so do our lives go forth ever evolving one season after another…

Magnolia tree

The magnolia tree is a symbol of magnificence because of its impressive height and enormous flowers. The white magnolia flowers stand for purity and perfection, perseverance, dignity and a love of nature. The magnolia flower also means love of nature. Magnolias are associated with the life force and therefore can be sent over on the occasion of birth.

Olive tree

The Olive branch has symbolized peace and re-connection since ancient Greek and Roman eras. It also symbolizes wisdom. Tradition says that the olive tree was gifted from gods to people. The olive oil was used as lighting oil and thus it was considered to be source of light. The olive tree symbolizes power and health because of the fact that olive trees are long-lived, simple and resistant.

Birch tree

Birch tree meanings include new beginnings and cleansing of the past, renewal, love, and protection. Birch trees are also associated with vision quests. The common name birch is derived from an old Germanic root meaning “white, bright or to shine.”
